Tell us about yourself….
I'm Kahla, the owner-manager of Brisbane's The Green Rebellion. I'm 36 years old, and I'm a single mama, or as I like to say, a super mama, to the gorgeous light of my life, Ivy Grace, who is turning 6 this July.
If you could describe your parenting style in one word….
“Loving”
What's the best thing about being a Mum?
Unconditional love. Being a Mum is the best gift of all
What's your funniest moment as a Mum?
Never a dull moment in our household! But highlights are definitely in the birthing room as a new mum, the things I did and said had even the midwives laughing for days. But also, when Ivy was about 1 and a half, she thought it was a good idea to take a poo in the lounge room and attempt to eat it and smear it all over her hands and face. For a moment I thought, 'where did she get that chocolate from?' and then it dawned on me.
What's your biggest lesson?
I'm still learning each and every single day! It's a journey on the lesson train! But my biggest lesson that will sit with me: Be kind – you never know what challenges other people are facing, and being kind and compassionate is key. Remember, it's okay to ask for help. It takes a village!
Take them up on their offer! Whether it's a family member, friend, or neighbor, find someone you trust to help out in any way you need. It can be something as simple as cooking a meal for your family, helping around the house, or watching your baby so you can rest or take a shower.
If you could give expecting Mums one tip or what's the one thing you wish someone told you?
Make self-care a priority. Looking after yourself can be difficult when you are caring for your baby and have limited time (and sleep!). Make sure you prioritize your mental health and emotional wellbeing during this period. Be realistic about what you can achieve each day and do things that make your soul happy. Remember, the washing can wait until you are ready. Even if it's just 30 minutes a day, such as meditation, deep breathing, or mindfulness, and gentle, daily exercise can help reduce any stress you may be feeling. And soak up every single minute of every single day as they grow so damn fast. Time is a thief of all! And before you know it, they're at school. And finally, never forget everyone’s experience is different.
